My name is Dr. Jennifer Aguilar and I am Louisville High School’s Assistant Principal for Academics. Brazilian novelist, Paulo Coelho (Kwai-loh), wrote in his novel The Alchemist: “Remember that wherever your heart is, there you will find your treasure.” In my years at Louisville, both as an English teacher and more recently as an administrator, I have witnessed the young women who enroll at Louisville invest their hearts and their minds and discover treasure. For every student, the treasures they walk away with are varied, but what is the same for each of them is the quality education, opportunities, relationships, and guidance and care offered to them which help them develop and discover these treasures.
In regards to our academic program, there are myriad opportunities. All of our curricular offerings are college preparatory and we offer Honors and Advanced Placement courses across all core subjects. Our passing rates on AP exams are consistently well above the state and national averages. Year after year, graduates return to our campus to visit and reconnect with former teachers and mentors and to express gratitude for the preparation they received for college. They often boast that they are the ones serving as tutors for their other classmates or that they are one of the only females in their classes who speak up in class discussions with confidence and without feeling inhibited by the presence of their male counterparts.
Our partnership with the Online School for Girls is a unique opportunity for girls with a particular interest to pursue an area of study that is either beyond her required work or beyond what fits in her present schedule. Given that these courses are highly interactive and conducted in an all-girl environment, students are able to engage with different perspectives across the country and broaden their own, while sharpening their skills in communication, collaboration, and creativity. Another benefit afforded by taking such an online course is the experience gained. It is becoming more customary for colleges around the country to offer certain courses online. The fact that our students can experience this type of learning environment and learn the organization and time management required to be successful in such a course gives them an advantage before they set foot on a college campus.
Our Focus Program is another way that students are given a chance to discover themselves and their interests. With cohorts in The Arts, Medicine & Health Sciences, Journalism & Media, Law & Social Justice, and STEM, students are given the opportunity to experience their chosen field both on campus through course work and extracurricular activities, and in the professional world, through field- work in the form of job shadowing, field trips and guest speaker lectures. Additionally, students in these FOCUS programs receive special training in the area of resume-building, networking, and interview skills. In my opinion, these FOCUS programs allow students to connect theory and subject matter knowledge with practice, thereby also allowing them to learn—in high school—whether they truly enjoy the field they are hoping to prepare for in college.
Lastly, our academic teams and clubs such as Mock Trial, Robotics, and Model United Nations, amongst others, provide students an opportunity for leadership, learning and competition with peers from other schools.
I share information about these diverse academic programs with you as prospective students because in my time at Louisville these are the opportunities that students have seized and that have given them the background to matriculate at some of the nation’s top universities and programs. With your academic promise and our blend of a rigorous and supportive educational environment, your options for college and career are limitless. I hope that you will allow us the privilege of nurturing your mind and heart and that you will choose Louisville as the school to help you discover your treasures—treasures that will serve you, but that will also help you heal, unify, and transform the world.
