Hacienda de Imaculada Orphanage in Tijuana welcomes Louisville students

On November 10th a bus carrying louisville students, parents and teachers arrived at the Hacienda de Imaculada (Home of the Immaculate Mary) Orphanage in the Matamoras region in Tijuana. Supported by the Corazon de Vida Foundation, the home cares for roughly 60 children and 10 mothers. The ages of the children range from three months to eighteen years. The ophanage is but one of over fifty in the Tijuana area housing an estimated 6,000 children.

Our students spent their visit reading books, playing games and puzzles and sharing a meal. We were blessed by the love shown to us by children just across the border. Hopefully our students were also blessed by an inspiration to do something about poverty and hunger ravaging our world.

September Coastal Cleanup Day a big success

On Saturday, September 15th, twelve members of the Louisville community met at Surfrider Beach in Malibu to participate in the 23rd annual Coastal Cleanup Day. This event is run by the Heal the Bay organization and the California Coastal Commission, and draws over 50,000 volunteers at hundreds of locations along the coast and inland. This year about 800,000 pounds of trash were collected in California, of which about 10% was recyclable.

Many thanks  to our seniors Keena Batti, Farrah Kazemi,  Liz Romero, and Schelsey Mahammadie-Sabet; juniors Carly Bonilla-Flores, Sarah Fitzgerald, and Leslie Forrester (whose team won a trophy for picking up the most cigarette butts), Nicole Karaan and Christine Maalouf. Special thanks to Mrs. Kass and Mrs. Stuffmann, as well as Mr. Gillen, who immortalized our efforts on film. The Explorers Club will be hosting an Earth Day beach cleanup in April. If you are interested, Heal the Bay schedules beach and trail cleanups monthly. See www.healthebay.org.
