Assistant Principal for Student Life schedules dynamic speakers to raise global awareness

Woodland Hills, CA (November 1, 2007) - Local And Global Awareness seems to be unfolding naturally at Louisville High School as the 2007-2008 academic year’s focus. In his first year as Assistant Principal for Student Life, Michael Bates, who also coordinates Christian Service and Student Government on campus, has planted many seeds here in Louisville's quiet glen.

Mr. Bates is making a conscious effort to bring in guest speakers to expose our teens to the challenges and opportunities that exist in our world. He strives to provide Louisville’s young women with exposure to local and global concerns as well as career opportunities for making a difference in our world. The impressive line-up includes Sudan survivor and author Benjamin Ajak, L.A. Times Opinion Editor Jim Newton, and Ghana's Catholic Relief Services spokesman Thomas Awiapo.

In planning assemblies for the year, Mr. Bates carefully considered how to fill this valuable time. “If we are to gather in an assembly, what is most worthy of our time and attention? Listening to people such as these calls us out of our own selfishness or cozy tucked-away world to a greater global awareness and participation. We as educators need to provide this exposure beyond classrooms and curriculum. A full assembly brings us the opportunity to deliver that.”
