Volleyball Sweeps Alemany to close out season

Congratulations to Frosh/Soph, JV and  Varsity Volleyball who enjoyed three straight victories at Alemany on Thursday November 1st to end their exciting season.

Frosh/Soph Volleyball Team Pulls

Stunning Upset of  FSH!!

The Frosh/Soph Volleyball team pulled of the upset of the season on October 30th, as they defeated previously undefeated Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in three games, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11. The visiting Tologs were undefeated Mission League champions, and had lost only one single match game all season long. You can make that a total of three games now, as the Frosh/Soph Royals would not be denied. Under the direction of Coach Robin Campbell, the Royals used a total team effort to come back from a one game deficit. Coach Campbell praised the spirit of her team, who used tough serves and pounding hits to catch, then to overcome the Tologs!!  Congratulations to the Frosh/Soph, who got “Senior Night” off to a resounding start.

Volleyball sweeps Notre Dame

Frosh/Soph, JV and Varsity Volleyball swept the night on Thursday October 25th for a spirit week match up that won’t soon be forgotten. The Varsity royals recovered from the loss of co-captain Sarah Martin who sprained her ankle early in the match to close out the fifth game 15-11. The Royals were ahead 2 games to 0 when Sarah Martin went down with an ankle sprain. Louisville lost their next two games. In the fifth game the Royals fell behind 8-4, but with a spark provided by senior Samantha Hubbard, the Royals rallied to tie the score 10-10. A total team effort and the support of the home crowd pulled the Royals to close out the night, with a final score of 15-11.

VARSITY UNITY: A blend ofExperience and Exuberance

The Varsity Volleyball team (2-6, 1-4) has battled adversity all season long, yet are standing tall. The Royals, who blend six seniors with six sophomores and one freshman, have grown in unity and performance in every game. Tri-Captain Sarah Martin ’08 leads the team in kills, as the Royals have worked to overcome the loss of Tri-Captain and “setter” Katie Bailey ’08, to season ending injury. Tri-captain Kristien Middleton ’08 and Kelsey Shaw ’10, have stepped in admirably at “setter,” and the team has rallied in every match.

On October 16th, the Royals swept Alemany in the final match of the first round of league, putting themselves in position to make a run at the post-season. The Royals came with an inspired effort against the Warriors, jumping out to an early lead in game one and never looking back. The Royals opened Mission league play on October 2nd, at Home vs. Chaminade. In the match, the Royals lost the first game and fell behind early in game two. However, the Royals staged a furious rally, eventually falling by a score of 26-28. Using the momentum of their game two rally and the ROAR of the LvHS crowd, the Royals stormed back to even the match by winning games three (25-17) and four (25-14.) Although the team lost a close game five, the Royals set the tone for a hard fought and exciting league season.

In the first half of league play, the Royals have received strong contributions from all players. In addition to those mentioned earlier, team members are:  Christina Henzgen ’10, Casey Anderson ’10, Melinda Marino ’08, middles; Taylor Scoscia ’10, Samantha Hubbard ‘08, Danna McDonald ’11; Christina Wendelin ’08, hitters; Jihan Shraibati ’10 and Chaz Enbody ‘08, liberos. The Volleyball team plays host to Notre Dame HS on October 25th, which will feature our first Fall Sports BBQ of the year, beginning at 5 p.m. on Pride Rock!! Good luck ROYALS!!!

JV Volleyball Battles Tough in Every Match!

The JV Volleyball team (5-6, 2-3) has played some of the most intense and exciting volleyball we’ve seen this season. Under the direction of Meredith Rice (Daily News Player of the Year 2004) the JV team has posted some great victories and has played terrific volleyball. In the pre-season, the JV posted impressive victories over LAB, Canyon and Viewpoint High schools.

October 2nd the JV opened Mission league play by defeating the Chaminade Eagles in two games. In that match, with the score tied 5-5 in game one, Louisville co-captain Amanda Saiki ’10 served for five straight points (including two aces) for a 10-5 advantage.  With the score now 11-7 Louisville, Valerie Dean ’10, served for 4 straight points, giving the Royals a 16-7 lead. Kills by co-captain Erin Flynn ’10 and Katie Rhatigan ‘10 highlight those rallies. After the Eagles had closed to 20-15, Amanda Saiki again went to the line and produced three service points (with one ace) for a 23-16 edge.  With Valerie Dean serving for game point, AnnMarie Henricksson ’11, spiked the game winning point, giving the JV game one. In an exciting, back and forth game two, the score was tied multiple times. Finally, with the score 24-24, Louisville’s Avanthi Hulugalle ’10, served out the match, where, once again the final kill was provided by AnnMarie Henricksson.

The JV lost their next league match vs Harvard-Westlake, but followed that up with an impressive victory at Notre Dame. In the ND match, the Royals jumped ahead early in both games and pulled away to secure the 2-0 victory. The JV lost their next match at FSH, setting up their final first round Mission league match vs. Alemany. Although the team lost 2-1, the match was incredibly close and exciting, with the final game going to “extra points.” Congratulations to the JV for their great effort so far!!

Frosh/Soph Volleyball Mid-Season Report

Under the direction of Robin Campbell, the Frosh/Soph volleyball team (6-4, 2-3) has played  great volleyball this season.  The Royals won four pre-season matches, highlighted by a 2-1 victory at Oaks Christian.  In that match, the Royals had to come from behind numerous times to secure the victory.  Other non-league victories came over LAB, Canyon, Burroughs and Viewpoint.

On the court, the Royals are lead by captains Emily Greene ’11 and Halowe Willets ’11 (pictured left to right,)  and have received stand out play from Katherine Cohen ’10, Amy Batchelor ’11, Ellen Moore ’11 and Caitlin Moran ’11 among others.

Volleyball Players Sing the National Anthem

The home crowd at the varsity volleyball game on October 4th got a special treat, as sophomores Jihan “Gigii” Shraibati and Christy Henzgen sang a stirring rendition of the National Anthem. Singing “two-part harmony,” the varsity team members took the microphone just prior to the introductions. The girls did a phenomenal job, as the deafening roar of the crowd could attest. It is a goal of the Athletic Department to showcase some of Louisville’s many outstanding performers with the singing of the National Anthem. Look for this exciting tradition to continue.
