Tennis defeats FSH in DOUBLE Tie-Breaker on Senior Day!!

On Tuesday, October 30th, the Varsity Tennis team took on Flintridge Sacred Heart on “Senior Day.” The match proved to be one of the most exciting contests ever, as the Royals defeated the Tologs in a rare double tie-breaker. A tennis match consists of 18 separate “sets,” nine “singles” and nine “doubles.” At the end of regulation, the Royals and Tologs were tied at 9-9.  In the Mission League, the first tie-breaker is the total games won by each team. In a rare and incredible twist, the Royals and Tologs each had won a total of 75 games!!

The second tie-breaker is a “head to head” match-up of both teams’ # 1 singles players. The first player to score 10 points wins the entire match for her school. Therefore, when Louisville #1 sophomore Sara Conley took the court, she carried the fortunes of Louisville Tennis and Senior Day with her.  Increasing the anticipation, Sara had been defeated earlier in the match by the FSH #1 player. This time, however, Sarah would not be denied. Sara confidently took out her opponent by a score of 10-6, sending Louisville tennis teammates and fans into a frenzy!!!! Congratulations to Louisville tennis on an epic Senior Day!!

Varsity and JV Tennis Battle Tough,

Beat FSH

Under the direction of Dan Mabe, the Varsity Tennis team (3-7, 2-3) has been a bright spot at Louisville for the last few years, and this year is no different. The Royals are lead in singles by the strong play of #1 sophomore Sara Conley, #2 sophomore Julianna Duva and #3 junior Lexy Sall. In doubles, the team pairings of junior Kaitlin Sterling and junior Sydney Yorkshire, junior Jennifer Koobie and junior Katie Tully and senior Michelle Nguyen and sophomore Danielle Fasani have all had their moments to shine this season.

After defeating Highland in the season opener by a score of 16-2, the Royals lost their final four non-league matches to traditionally powerful teams. The Mission League offers some of the best tennis played anywhere, and the Royals battled tough in losses to Notre Dame, Chaminade and Harvard-Westlake. However, on Thursday October 11th the Royals broke through with a solid victory over Flintridge Sacred Heart. Highlights include Julianna Duva coming back from 2-5 to win the final set 7-5.

The Royals got their second league victory with an outstanding performance against Alemany. The Royals won the match by a score of 13-5. In the match, all three doubles teams swept the Warriors (9-0) and the singles players won took four sets for the decisive victory. The JV Tennis team has a record of 3-7, 2-3. The JV has received strong leadership from juniors Valerie Chichiri, Crystal Resendez, Rebecca Shaheen, and Christianna Sim. Great job Royal Tennis!!!

Varsity Tennis Rolls in Opener 15-3

Under the direction of Dan Mabe, the Royal tennis team has made big gains every year, and this season is no different. With the team rolling on all cylinders, the varsity Royals soundly defeated Highland High School in the season opener fiftreen games to three. The team followed up with losses to Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure. However, both matches were much closer than the scores indicated, with the Royals taking over eighty individual games in each contest. Highlights from the St. Bonaventure match include LvHS #1 Julianna Duva defeating the Seraph #1 by a score of 7-5, and Royal #2 Sara Conley defeating the Seraph #2 in a tie-breaker 7-6. Finally, Coach Mabe also singled out the play of our #1 doubles team, junior Sydney Yorkshire and junior Katie Sterling, as outstanding so far this year.
