On Tuesday, November 6th, the team defeated visiting Glendora High School in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs, by a score of 1-0 at Moorpark College. The goal was scored by junior Rebecca Smith, and the defense held strong as the Royals scored another shutout with Devon Balsamo-Gillis in goal. The victory propelled the Royals into a semi-final showdown with Huntington Beach High School. The semi-final game will take place on Thursday, November 8th, at 3:00pm. The game site is TBA, and will be determined by CIF “coin flip.”

The Royals finished second in the Sunset League. Congratulations to Head Coach Sean Harris and the Field Hockey program, who continue to raise the bar each year!!  Good luck in the Semi-Finals!!

Field Hockey Surges toward the Top of the Sunset League

The Field Hockey team (7-2-2, 4-1-1), under the direction of Sean Harris, has played its way into second place in the Sunset League with an air tight defense and quick striking offense. The team came into the season with high expectations and have not disappointed. After a season opening defeat to Huntington Beach (0-1), the Royals reeled off three consecutive non-league victories, the first coming over Glendora by a score of 2-0 on goals scored by junior Emily Henricksson and junior Rebecca Smith. The next two victories were over Marina 1-0, and Westminster 2-0.

Sunset League play began on September 25th with a 1-1 tie at Chaminade. Louisville scored first with a goal scored by Rebecca Smith, but were tied at the two minute mark of the second half. In their next league game the Royals came back strong, beating Fountain Valley by a score of 4-0, with goals by Rebecca Smith, Emily Henricksson (2) and junior Ashley Gomer. The victory set up a huge match against league and section power Harvard-Westlake. The Royals defeated the Wolverines as Ashley Gomer deflected a shot by Emily Henricksson into the goal to give the Royals a 1-0 lead they would not relinquish. Junior Devon Balsimo-Gillis got the shut-out in goal. The victory set up a battle for first place against Newport Harbor, which the Royals lost in a tight battle 2-1.  However, this set-back would not slow down the Royals as they ended the first round with a 1-0 victory over Edison high school. Louisville’s winning goal was scored by Rebecca Smith in the 17th minute of the first half. The Royals opened the second half of league play by avenging their earlier tie with Chaminade, beating the eagles by a score of 2-0.

On defense, the Royals have given up only 4 goals all season. Leading the way on defense are junior Jennie Callas, senior Lindsay Hearn, junior Emily Gunderson, sophomore Meghan Conner and sophomore Nicole Spadone, among others.

On offense, the Royals have received strong contributions from junior Chrissy Romero, junior Maddie Sciarra, sophomore McKenna Green and junior Brianna Zanrosso, among others. Great job Field Hockey!!!!!

EMILY HENRIKSSON, Louisville, Junior., field hockey

A season after failing to qualify for the playoffs, Louisville of Woodland Hills is in the running for its first league title, and Henriksson is at the heart of the Royals' growth.

Henriksson is one of the area's most experienced players in a sport that is still just gaining interest locally. After getting hooked on the sport in middle school, Henriksson has spent recent years training with the country's top players in her age group. This past summer, she competed in the Junior Olympics for the third year in a row, then participated in the Elite EuroTour Camp in Spain.

Having three members of the U.S. Men's National Team coaching at Louisville provides further access to the type of instruction Henriksson hopes will allow her to continue playing beyond high school.

Although Louisville (7-2-2, 4-1-1) has developed a lineup full of solid players, Henriksson still stands out. She is the Royals' leading scorer with 11 goals and four assists, including six goals and two assists in six Sunset League games. She scored both of Louisville's goals in Thursday's 2-0 victory over Chaminade of West Hills, handing the Eagles their first league loss of the season.

The field isn't the only place Henriksson shines. She is also an honor student, who entered the semester with a 4.71 GPA.

Field Hockey Association Tournament of Champions - during the final 16minutes to preserve the shutout, the fifth for Louisville (5-1-2, 2-0-2).
