Department Philosophy
Art and technology education is essential to personal growth and development. A relevant visual arts program reflects and encompasses a broad spectrum of expression comprised of the fine arts, crafts, computer technology and media productions. It fosters independence, intellectual courage and industry as well as respect for human dignity. It is basic to developing fully literate, capable and conscientious citizens.
The visual arts program strives to include the mastery of technical skills in order to provide for the practical/technical applications of knowledge. Through the visual arts students learn to see aesthetically, experience the creativity of producing artwork, study their heritage through art and analyze art forms. Through technology students learn to use a variety of computer and video programs becoming proficient in the use of new media. This opens up opportunities for self-discovery, creative expression and historical connections. The visual arts instructor’s primary purpose is to build each student’s confidence, to help develop critical thinking skills, to act as a catalyst for aesthetic literacy and to foster an appreciation for our artistic/cultural heritage.
