Religious Studies

DEPARTMENT PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the Religious Studies Department is based on the belief that holistic education necessitates providing opportunities to explore the transcendent. As ministers of education, we accept the fourfold call to proclaim the message, to form community, to serve one another and to celebrate life together.

The essence of religious education is to facilitate the process of becoming Christian. This begins with the journey inward toward conversion of heart, which compels outward involvement with the wider community. As ministers of the Word, our intention is to make “faith become living, continuous and active through the light of instruction” (Christus Dominus #14). We proclaim the Word in fidelity to the authentic living traditions of the Catholic faith and the sacramental presence of Christ.

As a Christian community, we seek to affirm our common humanity in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding. As members of the human family, we strive toward solidarity with all of our neighbors throughout the world, recognizing the global dimensions of an interdependent world. We strive to minister to one another by continuously attempting to hear the prophetic spirit within our church and within our hearts, and by responding to the particular and changing needs of our times and our community. If often this causes us to be critics of our present society, we recognize that a commitment to education is a commitment to ministry, which is in turn a commitment to justice and love.

We celebrate life as we gather to hear the message and to serve one another. Furthermore, we recognize and celebrate the sanctity of life in all its stages and as a unique expression of God’s love and creation.
