Department Philosophy
The Mathematics program at Louisville High School is designed to produce competence in mathematical skills and an understanding of mathematical concepts and procedures, to empower the students to interpret and adjust to a transformed technological society, to inculcate an appreciation of the cultural heritage and beauty of mathematics, and to gain the necessary confidence, knowledge and techniques to apply mathematics to everyday problems.
Through exploration, conjecture and evaluation, students will realize and appreciate the importance and practicality of mathematics and will use it in meaningful ways. They will develop a capacity for integrating, applying and communicating mathematical understanding and will be empowered to view and use their knowledge as a tool for reasoning and problem-solving. They will develop strategies for continuing to learn and use mathematics with confidence as the world about them continually changes.
Appreciating the cultural heritage of mathematics, students will study its historical development, its beauty as exhibited in nature, art forms and musical compositions, and the universality of mathematical language.
Flexibility and openness to new ideas and a willingness to be aware of current changes in mathematics education are priorities of the department members. The department members make provisions for individual differences among the students, such as learning style, ability to take responsibility, ability to make independent decisions, as well as mathematical background and preparation.
