Department Philosophy
In accordance with the Louisville High School philosophy, the English Department, with the administration and other departments, provides an interdisciplinary program that strives to challenge all students. The department’s main concern is the development of the student as an intelligently critical and sensitive thinker, speaker, listener, reader, and writer. Realizing that language is the medium of sharing ideas, experiences and feelings, the department encourages English teachers to form their own integrated programs within department guidelines. These programs reflect the teachers’ love and appreciation of literature and are created to elicit from the students, through written and oral expression, a mature and comprehensive literate response. Ultimately, the English Department aims at helping the student assimilate psychological, aesthetic, and spiritual ideas into a personal philosophy of life.
