Louisville Career Fair a Huge Success

Louisville High School held its first Career Expo on March 5th, 2008, in St. Louis Hall. The professionals, including seven alumnae, brought with them a trade-show atmosphere as they engaged students in conversations about the excitement, challenges and educational requirements of their careers. This new format allowed students to browse the Expo asking questions, making connections and discovering new interests. Sr. Maria Goretti, S.S.L. of Louisville’s Guidance Department ensured that a wide range of fields were represented, including both men and women, for a broad and realistic experience for the students.

Alumnae who participated in the event enjoyed their productive visit to their alma mater.  Lynda Murray ’83 shared her Interior Design career with our students. She stated, “I was very impressed with the girls. I received GREAT questions from

the girls… very articulate!!” Clinical psychologist Teri Maloney ’76 agreed. “The girls were great – very engaging and intelligent. I had fun!” Ventura County Superior Court Judge Patricia Murphy ’80 graciously found a substitute for the bench that day as she was “looking forward to returning to Louisville High School and pleased to participate.” Other Louisville alumnae in attendance included attorney Shivaun Cooney ’94, author Kelly Brown ’84, actress Heather McDonald ’88 and pediatric nurse Laurie Newton ’81.

Mr. Barry Caires, father of Monica Caires ’04, represented Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems and stated, “The girls asked some very interesting questions. Two of the students who want to be engineers were very familiar with Raytheon as they recently participated in our engineering event. These girls, along with Rebecca Kratz ’08 who will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, asked some great questions. I do want to point out that all of the girls were terrific. Naturally, I would not expect anything else.” Physics teacher Mr. Jim Centorino observed, “Students asked a wide variety of intellectually profound questions. Some visited a wide variety of representatives collecting information, while others focused on one or two in great detail.”

The impact of the Career Expo on the students was significant and evidenced by sophomore Brittney Daniels, who discussed her medical career aspirations with Children’s Hospital nurse Laurie Newton ’81. Brittney plans to pursue a volunteer position at Children’s Hospital during the summer. From writers and directors to FBI agents and an ob-gyn, there was something for everyone to explore. Louisville is grateful to all of our outstanding alumnae who participated and look forward to even greater participation next year. Please contact Sr. Maria Goretti at mgcrowley@louisvillehs.org if you would like to share a few hours of your time at a future Career Expo.
