CSF: California Scholarship Federation
CSF is an honor society that fosters scholarship, service and citizenship. Membership is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors based on semester grades. Students apply each semester by filling out the application form, presenting a copy of their semester grades and paying the five dollar application fee by the deadline. Currently, the juniors and seniors are applying using their June 2006 grades for membership in CSF.
Those who have been members for four semesters (one semester must be in senior year with senior grades) are awarded lifetime membership. This honor means they receive the CSF gold seal on their diploma, the CSF Lifetime Membership Certificate and this honor is noted on their official transcript. The LvHS Class of 2007 had sixty graduates who achieved the prestige of CSF Lifetime Membership.
National Honor Society (NHS)
The National Honor Society is a national student organization committed to the recognition of students for their scholarship, leadership, character and service. A student is invited to join NHS at the completion of sophomore year, after maintaining a cumulative 3.5 grade point average (GPA). After completion of a personal resume, including activities and awards, and the additional candidacy paperwork, the final selection for membership is based on an evaluation of the student's qualities by the Faculty Council. Candidates are invited to attend the Induction Ceremony and receive their NHS pin. To retain membership a student must maintain a 3.5 GPA at the end of each semester, attend scheduled meetings, and complete the required school service hours. Membership in NHS is indicated by a seal on the graduation diploma and is noted on all transcripts of academic work. A student will jeopardize her membership in NHS if academic integrity is breached.
Welcome Address from Assistant Principal of Academics, Miss Jennifer PErez
Good morning. I am Ms. Pérez, your assistant principal for academics, and I would like to offer you a very warm welcome to the start of a new school year. As a child, I always perceived the beginning of a school year as a fresh start. I would get so excited about getting new school supplies, making new friends and learning from a new teacher. Now as an adult, the start of a school year still provides me with a sense of new opportunities but it is also a time for me to set goals and reflect on self-improvement.
The beginning of this school year, in particular, has prompted me to have ample thoughts as to how I can be a better person simply because I am alive and have the opportunity and ability to do so. You see, it was less than two weeks ago that I attended the funeral services for my twenty-five year old cousin who had not only been battling a chronic illness since birth, but who was also diagnosed with cancer right before we left for summer vacation.
Obstacles such as this one, though difficult to surmount, help put our priorities in perspective, though it should neither take an event like this for us to identify what is important in our lives nor should we require tragedy to teach us appreciation. On a personal level, this tragic incident has reiterated the importance that my family, fiancé, friends, and students have in my life. It has also confirmed this idea of “carpe diem”, seize the day, which in essence just comes down to maximizing every opportunity. Because of her illnesses, my cousin was unable to lead an entirely normal life. However, instead of dwelling on how her life was impaired by sickness, she focused on taking advantage of what she was able to do and savored every moment. Perhaps what I have found most remarkable about her is that despite the cross she was bearing, she approached life courageously and confronted every circumstance with optimism and a smile on her face. I certainly have much to learn from the life my cousin Gloria lived and have vowed to not let her struggles go in vain.
As my personal tribute to her, I have decided to dedicate my year to her: whatever good times come and whatever achievements I accomplish this year will be commemorated to her and whenever I am experiencing a challenge, feeling like nothing is going my way, or am on the verge of complaining, I will remember her example and tackle those obstacles with a positive attitude. I will place a picture of her in my office as a constant reminder of the obligation I have to approach life happily and positively, given that I am fortunate enough to be alive.
I share this story and my personal goals for this year to illustrate that we all have struggles, but we also have options as to how we react to those struggles and we all have the opportunity to make the best of the moments in our lives. Whether you are freshmen experiencing your third day at Louisville or a new or returning student, you will be showered with abundant opportunities to make the most of. How lucky you are to have these opportunities and to have the life and ability to embrace them. Academically, you will experience a rigorous course load—it will be up to you to decide whether you will rise to meet the challenge with a strong work ethic or if you will let your intelligence and talent waste away simply because you do not want to push yourself. It is my wish that you choose the former and that you take ownership of the educational experiences you have here.
This year you will learn a lot, and I encourage you to earn good grades, but most importantly, I am cheering you on to grasp the essence of what is being taught and to apply your knowledge rather than just retain it. This year, just like every other year, you have the opportunity to make every effort of yours count, please don’t conform to mediocrity. Always autograph your work with the excellence you possess. And, every time you are given a new opportunity, regardless of its ease or challenge, simply reflect on how lucky you are to have opportunities and how fortunate you are to speak a beautiful message through your actions and the decisions you make in your life. Know that I am working with you to seize the day, everyday. God bless and best wishes for a successful year.
