Louisville High School is a college preparatory, Catholic high school for young women with a long and proud academic tradition. Its heritage can be traced to the mid-1800’s when the Sisters of St. Louis were founded in France. Coming to California from Ireland in 1949 the Sisters were led by Sister Mary Ronan who was inspired to move forward with confidence in God and openness toward the horizons of the future.
The Legacy of Manzanita Ranch
In September 1960, the old Manzanita Ranch with its wooded canyons, green fields and white painted horse corrals became the site for Louisville High School.
Reflections on the Early Years
Ninety-one young women and five teachers formed the nucleus of what is today one of the finest Catholic college preparatory high schools in Los Angeles for young women.
The faculty and students came together years ago with a common vision: to create a Christian community for spirituality, learning and outreach. Today the vision of those pioneers is a reality. Louisville High School has matured into a lively family of individuals, all engaged in the exciting process of learning.
School Crest
The St. Loius Coat of Arms combines simplicity with a wealth of symbolism. The central device, a sword encircled by a
crown of thorns, recalls at once the chief patron saint of the Congregation of St. Louis, King Louis IX of France. In the lower left-hand portion of the shield appears a simplified version of the coat of arms of Monaghan town; a tower on which is a shield bearing the red hand of Ulster, where the Motherhouse is situated. Opposite the tower is a fleur de lis, the royal arms of France, recalling the French origin of the Congregation of St. Louis. The inverted chevron of a golden chain symbolizes the "strong bond of true Christian union" which joins the Sisters and students in unity, charity and zeal. This is again emphasized by the text, "Ut sint unum," "That all may be one." The motto, "Dieu le veult," "God wills it," speaks to the Louisville students of courage, enthusiasm and ardent devotion to duty in the cause of religion, country and home - all virtues required by the ideal of Christian womanhood.
